Executive Officers


Paul Kusserow

President and Chief Executive Officer

Paul Kusserow is the President and Chief Executive Officer for Amedisys and member of its Board of Directors. Kusserow, a healthcare industry veteran with deep expertise in driving growth strategies, most recently served as President and Vice Chairman of Alignment Healthcare, Inc., an integrated clinical care company focused on providing care to the Medicaid population. Prior to that, he served as Senior Vice President, Chief Strategy, Innovations and Corporate Development Officer of Humana, Inc., a Fortune 75 healthcare services and benefits company.

Kusserow’s experience also includes time as Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer of the Ziegler HealthVest Fund; Managing Director of San Ysidro Capital Partners, L.L.C.; and Managing Partner of Roaring Mountain, L.L.C. He began his healthcare career with Tenet Healthcare Corporation, one of the nation’s largest investor-owned healthcare service companies, where he spent seven years, the last four as Senior Vice President, Strategy and Ventures. Kusserow is on the boards of Connecture (Nasdaq: CNXR), Picwell, and New Century Health. Prior to Tenet, Kusserow was a consultant at McKinsey and Company, Inc. Kusserow received his Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and his Master of Arts from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.


Chris Gerard

Chief Operating Officer

Chris Gerard is Chief Operating Officer, overseeing the company’s home health, hospice and personal care divisions.

Gerard has a track record of more than 20 years experience in home health and hospice. He was co-founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of IntegraCare Home Health, where he built a single home health start-up location into 54 branches, generating $71 million in annual revenues. He sold the company to Kindred Healthcare in 2012. He then served as Vice President of South Central Region for the Kindred at Home division, currently a $2.5 billion home health, hospice and community care services business with approximately 700 locations and 42,000 employees nationwide. Gerard was promoted to Chief Operating Officer at Kindred at Home, where he was responsible for integrating a $140 million home health company; standardizing processes across a division involving 187 locations, staff of 3,300 and revenue of $360 million. Most recently, he served as President for the South Central Region of Kindred at Home with responsibility for day-to-day operations, including the integration of the Gentiva Home Health acquisition within his region, oversight of clinical excellence, financial performance and operational efficiencies for 153 home health and hospice locations in six states with annual revenue in excess of $400 million.

Gerard received his Bachelor degree in Finance from Texas Tech University.

David Kemmerly

General Counsel and Senior Vice President of Government Affairs

David Kemmerly, General Counsel and Senior Vice President of Government Affairs for Amedisys, has over 25 years of experience in governmental affairs, with more than 17 years specializing in health care law and public policy. Most recently, he served as Special Counsel at Adams and Reese LLP, a multidisciplinary law firm where he represented diverse health care interests before the state legislature and state agencies.

Prior to Adams and Reese, Mr. Kemmerly served as Director of State Public Affairs of Humana, Inc. for six years where he was responsible for legislative and regulatory affairs and outcomes in all 50 states. In this role, he developed and led implementation of successful state legislative and regulatory strategies that helped protect the business interests of one of the nation's largest health insurers with over 13 million medical enrollees.

Mr. Kemmerly has extensive experience in state and national government relations, including serving as the Louisiana State Medical Society’s Associate Director in the Department of Governmental Affairs where he lobbied state legislators, state regulatory agencies, and the U.S. Congress on issues impacting physicians and the practice of medicine. He also served as an attorney for the Louisiana State Senate, political consultant for DLK Consulting Group, and in the offices of various elected officials.

Mr. Kemmerly received his Bachelor of Arts from Louisiana State University, and his Juris Doctor from Tulane University Law School. He is also a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association.


Ronald LaBorde

Vice Chairman and Strategic Executive

Ronald A. LaBorde is the Vice Chairman and Strategic Excecutive for Amedisys, having most recently served as Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer for the company. Before Amedisys, he served as president of HR Solutions, LLC, a private company that provides outsourced administration associated with human resources. Prior to that, he managed personal investments, which included non-public operating companies, and provided management consulting services to various privately-held companies, including HR Solutions, LLC. His experience includes eight years as president and chief executive officer of Piccadilly Cafeterias, Inc., a publicly traded retail restaurant business. Mr. LaBorde has served on Amedisys’ Board of Directors for 17 years and served as Lead Director from February 2003 until his employment with Amedisys in 2011.

Michael North

Chief Information Officer

Michael North serves as Chief Information Officer for Amedisys, managing the company’s technology and analytics systems to support enterprise - wide operations and growth. He joined Amedisys in 2015 as senior vice president of operations and led the integration of the company’s successful conversion to the HomeCare HomeBase operating system.

North brings more than 30 years experience in integration, project management and process and system development. He most recently held leadership roles at Humana, where he oversaw the successful integration of numerous acquisitions and of shared service organizations within the company as a director in Corporate Development. Prior to that, he was integration leader for strategic acquisitions at Humana.North helped lead the creation of the Humana Vitality program, managed multiple acquisitions and worked on other company - wide initiatives.

His previous experience includes management roles at Kindred Healthcare, where he led clinical systems development for the company’s pharmacy line of business and the company’s other organizations. North holds an MBA from the University of Louisville in Kentucky and a Bachelor of Science from Eastern Illinois University.

David Pearce

Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer

David Pearce manages and oversees the company’s ethics and compliance program, including the development and oversight of policies, procedures and practices designed to promote ethical behavior and compliance with federal and state healthcare program laws and regulations. He also assesses compliance vulnerability and risk within the organization.

Pearce has served a number of healthcare organizations, including Kindred and Extendicare. Most recently, he served as the Senior Vice President and Chief Counsel for Kindred’s at Home division, a $2.5 billion home health, hospice and community care services business with approximately 600 service locations and 42,000 employees across the country. Prior to rejoining Kindred, Pearce served as General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer for Extendicare Health Services, Inc., as well as serving in a variety of other general counsel, compliance, and legal roles for organizations like Vencor (predecessor to Kindred) and in private practice with law firms in Lexington, Kentucky and Atlanta, Georgia. He began his legal career as a Staff Judge Advocate for the United States Navy.

Pearce received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kentucky and earned his Juris Doctor from Northern Kentucky University.


Larry R. Pernosky

Chief Human Resources Officer

Larry R. Pernosky, Chief Human Resources Officer for Amedisys, has over 30 years of experience leading human capital strategies to drive superior business outcomes. His expertise spans the health care, consumer goods manufacturing, petrochemical engineering, energy services, and media and entertainment industries.

Most recently, Mr. Pernosky served as Vice President of Human Capital Consulting for Humana, Inc., where he held various positions since 2004 and was instrumental in driving key human resources operational efficiencies for the leading health and well-being company. Working in close partnership with the Chief Operating Officer’s executive team, he was accountable for the coordination and cross-organizational collaboration of the HR Business Leadership team, Organizational Design and Change Practice, Company Policy and Practice, HR Due Diligence in Mergers and Acquisitions and Associate Relations. During his 11 years at Humana, he also led Organizational Design, HR M&A, Policy, Change Management and Associate Communications.

Mr. Pernosky’s experience runs the gamut from Fortune 200 companies with global responsibilities to small, entrepreneurial start-up companies, including significant international experience. He has also held positions at Big Idea Productions, Inc., Halliburton Corporation, and Whirlpool Corporation.

Mr. Pernosky received his Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Kent State University and executive education certificate in HR Strategy and Capability from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.


Stephen Seim

Chief Strategy Officer

Stephen Seim is the Chief Strategy Officer for Amedisys. Before joining the Amedisys team, Mr. Seim spent 18 years at Humana where he was responsible for building and leading their Corporate Strategy Team. This team developed the organization’s overall strategy as well as the strategies identifying and building the growth platforms used to diversify Humana’s business and build out their integrated care delivery model. This work drove over $2 billion in acquisitions. Steve also led Medicare Advantage segmentation work, an initiative to drive alignment around serving members with diabetes, Humana’s long term financial forecasting and capital deployment planning, and Medicare Prescription Drug operations.

Prior to his work at Humana, Steve was an Executive at Deloitte & Touche Consulting Group and a Senior Consultant at Ernst & Young. Steve attended the University of Notre Dame where he received a BBA in Accountancy. He also holds an MBA in Finance/Operations from Duke University. He is licensed as a CPA in the State of Texas.


Susan Sender

Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer

Susan Sender, RN, BSN, CHCE, serves as Amedisys’ Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer, overseeing clinical practice, quality, clinical operations standards setting, clinical program development and implementation, clinical education and all facets of patient care, quality outcomes and clinician support across the organization.

Ms. Sender has extensive expertise in healthcare at home, with more than thirty years of experience in the industry. She joined Amedisys from Kindred at Home, where she served as Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer for three years. At Kindred, Ms. Sender was responsible for the oversight of all clinical program development; policy development; quality and performance improvement; regulatory compliance; clinical analytics; and clinical education for more than 35,000 nurses, therapists, social workers and aides across 40 states.

Prior to Kindred, Ms. Sender spent five years working as the Chief Clinical Officer and Vice President of Pediatric Operations for Loving Care Agency. Her other clinical management experience includes 23 years with Gentiva, the last 7 as the as Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive. She has special expertise in quality improvement, clinical practice, policy development, reducing unnecessary hospitalizationsand all clinical aspects of Mergers and Acquisitions . Ms. Sender has served on national advisory boards and CMS panels.

She holds a BSN from Adelphi University in Garden City, New York.

Gary D. Willis

Chief Financial Officer

Gary Willis oversees all aspects of the company’s financial operations, capital and financing strategy, public reporting and investor relations.

Willis is a senior financial executive with more than 25 years of experience, including 14 years in the healthcare industry. He most recently served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Capella Healthcare, Inc., where he oversaw financial operations of its acute care hospital facilities and guided the transition of the company from private equity ownership to an innovative capital structure with a public real estate investment trust. Prior to Capella Healthcare, Willis served as Chief Financial Officer for investment firm Martin Ventures. He has also served as Senior Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer for Vanguard Health Systems, Inc., a Fortune 500 public healthcare company with revenues of $6 billion operating hospitals, health plans and related businesses; and Senior Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer for LifePoint, Health, Inc., a publicly-held healthcare services company.

A Certified Public Accountant, Willis earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Western Kentucky University.
